1: LEARNING TO LISTEN
There are two main ways to approach playing music generally, and the guitar in particular. You can either take the formal lessons route, which involves learning to read music from the ground up, ditto music theory, ditto Grade adjudications, with achievement certificates at the end as a reward for all that work.
Or you can take the more common route, especially for guitar and piano players, of learning everything by ear, and perhaps adding all the technical stuff later. This second option was the only one open to me, and relied entirely on me nurturing my ability to carefully listen to, and plot accurately, where the notes were going. Doing this at every opportunity is the quickest way to get your ears working in conjunction with your hands. I spent every available minute on the fretboard working out advertising jingles, movie, and TV themes, and as many snatches of any tune I heard as I could decipher [even including “God Save the Queen!!”] There is no substitute for listening to as much varied music as possible.
