3: PITCHING
YOUR VOICE
The quickest and easiest way to check whether what you are singing matches what you are listening to is to record yourself doing it. In these days of everyone has a smartphone with a recorder built in, it’s very easy to do. Play the track you are trying to sing to and sing along while recording. Listen back and see how close (or otherwise!) you got to the original tune. The most important thing to distinguish is which way you are out of tune – up or down. Or both. You must be brutally honest with yourself and try this over and over until you get as near to the original as possible. Golden Rules: Don’t choose difficult songs or pieces (no opera, or Bohemian Rhapsody!), or anything that involves extremely high and low notes.
Start simply: Nursery rhymes, simple folk tunes, repetitive pop songs. And don’t just try what you like. It’s not about taste, it’s about listening ability and how quickly to acquire it. You can afford to be fussy only when you can properly recreate what you hear.
