7: TONES AND SEMITONES
The easiest way to identify Tones and Semitones is this:
Any two frets anywhere on the fretboard, on Any string, that have one fret between them, are deemed to be a Tone apart, whether being played up or dawn.
Therefore, any two frets next door to each other with no fret between them are deemed to be Semitones.
By counting the Tones and Semitones in a particular way we can create a major scale starting on any string anywhere on the fretboard, thus:
