9: TWENTY EASY PRACTICE TUNES
Here is a simple way to get started with plotting the keynote in a song, and eventually being able to plot the other notes, because not all songs, even very simple ones, begin with the keynote. So, here’s a simple chart I devised for you to practise Finding the Tune.
It’s based on the G Major scale [Shape 1].
The numbers in the circles are left-hand fingers.
The dark circles are the keynote of G.
Each of the 20 listed songs begins on a certain String and Fret, as listed. Your task is to find the rest of the tune WITHOUT going outside the circled notes; all these tunes are contained within the scale as drawn, so there are no tricks. It’s a very good way of plotting whether the notes in the tune are going up or down or staying in the same place.
If you don’t know some of the tunes, search them on YouTube and give them a listen, but please don’t watch anyone else playing them as this will defeat the object – namely, of you being able to find the tune yourself.
Have Fun!
